HPC Gateway
HPC Gateway supports challenges in the field of AI through the availability of large amounts of data and High Performance Computing (HPC).
HPC Gateway is an initiative of the Helmholtz Association, which is funded with 18 million euros and supports companies in overcoming challenges in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). The aim is to make the Helmholtz Association's globally unique high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, extensive data sets and AI expertise accessible to companies.
In a one-year pilot phase, nine Helmholtz Centers at eight locations are opening up their HPC infrastructure for cooperative projects with companies. The companies not only receive access to the technology, but also support from AI consultants, IT managers and scientific experts who advise on adapting the problems to the HPC capacities and data processing. These are based on bilaterally coordinated projects with partial funding from the companies. In addition, a training and further education program is planned to ensure the long-term, profitable use of HPC capacities and AI methods in science and industry.
The initiative aims to strengthen the transfer of knowledge between research and industry, promote regional innovation ecosystems in the field of AI, digital twins and HPC-supported innovations and better understand the specific requirements of industry for the use of AI. HPC Gateway builds on experience from previous projects such as the Smart Data Innovations Lab (SDIL) or the AI service centers and aims to implement such collaborations throughout Germany. This should not only make companies more future-proof, but also sustainably strengthen Germany as a location for science and business in the digital transformation.
