Challenge #136
With algorithms against cancer.
Algorithms can provide decisive clues in the fight against cancer. They analyze molecular tumor profiles and image data. We are developing computer-based methods to diagnose cancers more precisely and reliably and treat them in a more targeted manner.
Participating centers
No two tumors are alike: Each arises from the interaction of various, individually different genetic alterations. To develop therapies as precisely as possible, we want to gather as much information as possible about the diseased cells during the diagnostic phase.
Novel omics technologies can create a high-resolution molecular portrait of any tumor in a short time: At the German Cancer Research Center, we capture not only the entire genome but also all gene activities and epigenetic features.
This valuable data has to be processed to be accessible for research and clinical practice. An essential tool in this is artificial intelligence (AI): We are developing algorithms that help to identify correlations in large volumes of data. Doctors can use this information to derive treatment recommendations - adapted to the molecular makeup of each tumor.
AI is also helpful in medical imaging: with each new generation of equipment, computer tomographs and magnetic resonance scanners provide more information from inside the body. We are therefore developing algorithms that help extract more information from the image data.
