Helmholtz International Fellow Award presented to five excellent scientists
Their research looks into Big Data’s impact on weather forecasts, the causes of diabetes, and the origins of our solar system. Five exceptional international scientists have received the "Helmholtz International Fellow Award" in the first round of this year's nominations.
In addition to €20,000 in prize money, the award winners are invited to be visiting researchers at one or more Helmholtz Centers. "I wholeheartedly congratulate them," says Otmar D. Wiestler, President of the Helmholtz Association. "They have all made exceptional contributions to fields of research which are central to the work of our research association. Above all, the award is therefore intended to deepen our collaboration with them."
The five senior scientists selected to receive the Helmholtz International Fellow Award in the current round of nominations come from the United States, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. They have been working closely with Helmholtz Centers. As part of their nominations, they presented concrete plans for continuing these collaborations. "We hope, of course, that they also become ambassadors for further cooperation between their institutions and the Helmholtz Association," says Otmar D. Wiestler.
The recipients of the first round of the 2018 Helmholtz Fellow Awards are:
- Peter Bauer, nominated by AWI, Deputy Director, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, UK
- Richard James Saykally, nominated by DESY, Professor, Dpt. of Experimental and Theoretical Physical Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, USA
- Melinda Darby Dyar, nominated by DLR, Senior Scientist, Planetary Science Institute, USA
- Claudia Langenberg, nominated by HMGU, Program Leader MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge, UK
- Nils Mårtensson, nominated by HZB, Professor, Dpt. of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University, Sweden
This prize, financed by the Helmholtz President’s Initiative and Networking Fund, was first awarded in 2012. Since then, the Executive Committee has selected researchers nominated by Helmholtz institutions twice a year. The current award winners were chosen on June 26, 2018. In autumn 2018, five more researchers will be selected through a second round of nominations. The deadline for applications for the next round of awards is September 28, 2018. The selection will then take place at the Executive Committee meeting on November 7, 2018.
