Solidarity with Israel
In a joint statement on October 12, the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany commented on the situation in the Middle East. Israel has always been and will always be a central partner of the German research and innovation community. Our thoughts are with the victims and hostages from Israel and around the world, as well as their families and friends.
The Alliance of Science Organizations is an association of the most important science organizations in Germany. It regularly takes a position on important issues of science policy. Helmholtz is a member of the Alliance. Other members are the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation, he German Academic Exchange Service, the German Research Foundation, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the German Rectors' Conference, the Leibniz Association, the Leopoldina, the Max Planck Society and the German Science Council.
Helmholtz also supports the international appeal of the Israeli Academy of Sciences, the Israel Science Foundation and the Council for Higher Education to the academic and scientific community around the world and endorses the demands it contains. On Oct. 30, the organizations issued the appeal.
Israel's Gravest Crisis: A Call to the Academic and Scientific Community
Many Israeli researchers have been severely restricted by terror and war in recent weeks and months. German and other European science organisations are trying to help, for example by offering Israeli scientists the opportunity to continue their research projects in Europe for a transitional period.
Helmholtz President Otmar D. Wiestler visited Israel in early February. He emphasised the importance of German-Israeli relations for German science and for Helmholtz in particular.
