Deutsche Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY

The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY is one of the world's leading particle accelerator centers. The Helmholtz Center, based in Hamburg and Zeuthen near Berlin, employs around 2,900 people. DESY develops and builds particle accelerators and detection instruments, providing unique tools for research: the facilities generate the strongest X-ray light in the world, bring particles to record energies and open up completely new insights into the universe. Every year, more than 3,000 scientists from over 40 nations use DESY's high-performance equipment as guest researchers to understand the microcosm in all its diversity: from the interplay of the smallest elementary particles to the behavior of novel nanomaterials and processes that take place between biomolecules. The aim of the center is to advance knowledge in research with photons, in particle and astroparticle physics and in accelerator physics. This combination is unique in Europe.
